What are the different types of carpet?

There are 3 carpet manufacturing types that produce carpets of various qualities:

- Woven Axminster
- Machine tufted - broadlooms & modular (carpet tiles)
- Hand tufted

WHAT IS AXMINSTER CARPET?

Axminster is a woven cut pile carpet developed over 250 years ago for royal residences. Nowadays, it is still the very best option for quality carpet. It is known for its high quality construction, extreme durability and very high clarity of pattern.

Each tuft of yarn is woven and locked into place by shots of backing yarn. This creates a strong, three-dimensional structure more durable than tufted carpet.

Another unique property of Axminster carpet is that the yarn used is thoroughly dyed before weaving, unlike other carpet types. Pair this with wool’s natural high colour fastness and Axminster’s unique construction, and you get a carpet that will last decades and stay vibrant, even in high-traffic areas.

This is what makes custom Axminster a highly sustainable and eco-conscious option - once you put it down, you don’t need to think about replacing it for at least 10 years. That’s why we highly recommend choosing a well designed Axminster carpet woven with New Zealand wool for your residential or commercial project - it will stand the test of time, offer a plush, luxurious feel underfoot and provide warmth and comfort that is hard to match.

WHAT IS DYE-INJECTED CARPET?

A dye injected carpet’s construction is a tufted cut or loop pile.

It is tufted as plain white in 3.66m or 4 metres roll widths and then fed through a machine that injects the the coloured pattern into the pile, allowing for nuanced results not achievable with other carpet options.

There are 3 types of dye injection machines - Chromjet, Colaris and Militron.

What’s the difference between wool and nylon carpets?
What are the benefits of wool carpets compared to synthetic fibres?

Wool fibres have a unique structure and properties that modern synthetic fibres can only try to replicate, but never replace.

A wool carpet has a higher appearance retention than Nylon -  it looks better for longer. Because the proteins present in the wool fibres’ matrix are high in Sulphur, they attract water molecules under the right conditions. This is what allows the fibre to absorb and retain large amounts of dye - resulting in luscious colours.

A wool carpet does not burn, also thanks to its Sulphur rich matrix. In fact, wool acts as a fire retardant - it slows down burning, unlike Nylon, which burns very fast and emits highly toxic fumes.

A wool carpet breaths water/humidity up to 30% of its own weight.

A wool carpet filters VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds).

A wool carpet has a distinctive warm aesthetic compared to Nylon. Because it is a natural fibre, its plush look and feel will always be superior.

How long does wool carpet last?
How durable is wool carpet?

A 80/20 New Zealand wool woven Axminster can last 40+ years. Other types of carpet made from wool will out-live their Nylon counterparts in most cases, thanks to wool fibres’ unique structure.

Yes. We have extensive colour libraries of various fibres from several different manufacturers  - think hundreds of colour and finish options. We can also custom colour match your interior when required.

Can you help me colour-match my carpet to my walls/ furniture?

Yes, we can colour match wool yarn to other materials however some materials can be metameric making a perfect match arguable. In which case we select the best option from several.

How to choose the right carpet colour for a room?

“It depends on whether you already have a specific interior style in mind. I had a client who had a clear idea of the style they wanted, for example, a modern carpet in white but functional. For them, I took a risk and designed a white and light grey carpet with specks of colour to add functionality.

I had another client who knew she wanted a 60s style carpet, which immediately gave us the design and colour direction.

I suggest the best approach is to imagine your ideal room and home, then describe it to us. We can then provide you with a shortlist of styles and colours that match your vision.”

- Sudi Dargipour, Custom Carpets design director

What is a micro-pattern and why is it good for carpet?

A micro-pattern is a very small pattern, often intentionally random and without pattern match. When utilised properly in carpet design, it can seem like a carpeted area is a plain colour from afar, but upon closer inspection, a micro-pattern reveals a more sophisticated multi-colour equation.

In carpet design, a micro-pattern is a very powerful tool and has multiple uses - it makes large areas of plain colour more visually interesting by using other colours from the same colour family. Having a micro-pattern base is a great way to add depth to and soften geometric carpet designs, and avoid large areas of plain colour. Furthermore, it can be a smart way to introduce colours from your space into your carpet - helping create a cohesive and balanced interior.

Finally, a well designed micro-pattern makes the carpet more forgiving for care and maintenance - it’s much harder to spot stains and dirt on a patterned carpet than on a plain one. This means that you can have light coloured carpet even in high-traffic areas.

Our 2024 Residential Axminster collection was carefully designed with all these points in mind.

CARPET MAINTENANCE

How to clean carpets effectively at home?
What is the best carpet cleaning method?
How to clean wool carpets without damaging them?

The most important rule to remember is to tend to the soiling immediately. Blot the soiling with dry paper or cotton towels first, to absorb the liquid sitting on the surface. Do NOT rub, just pat gently.

Professionals recommend the warm water extraction method to deep clean carpets with a high wool content, in conjunction with a suitable carpet shampoo.

It's important not to over-saturate the carpet with water (this can cause colour bleed) and to pat the carpet, instead of rub - rubbing will push the stain deeper into the carpet fibres.

For best results, consult a carpet cleaning professional.

How to keep light carpets looking clean?
How to keep carpets clean in a household with pets and/or young children?

We cannot advise on a magical solution for keeping light carpets clean, other than to try and avoid soiling and always tend to soiling immediately.

However, if you are shopping for a new carpet and would love to have a light carpet in your home, we strongly recommend opting for a carpet design that utilises a micro-pattern. This is a smart way to draw less attention to inevitable stains that come with use.

Consider our highly versatile 2024 woven Axminster carpet collection that utilises 5 micro-patterns for a smart, stylish and durable carpet solution.

How to get rid of carpet odour?

If your carpet has an unpleasant odour, a deep clean is recommended. To prevent carpet odour, keep your spaces well ventilated and dry your carpet if it gets wet.

How to prevent mould and mildew in carpets?

Our best advice is to keep your spaces well ventilated and dry your carpet if it gets wet. Avoid installing carpet in areas that might get wet, such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

How to get rid of carpet beetles and moths?

If your carpet has critters living in it, our best recommendation is to replace it. If that isn’t possible, consult a carpet cleaning professional.

Can carpet burns be repaired?

Yes, but with less than great results. Excessive heat from hot objects, irons, embers, cigarettes, hair styling tools etc melts synthetic fibres, meaning there is no way to bring them back. There are some DIY options for masking the damage, such as re-tufting, scraping/sanding off the black burn mark and sewing a patch over, but nothing can reverse the damage.

You can avoid this problem completely by choosing a pure wool carpet, or a carpet with a high wool content. Wool fibres are naturally flame retardant, meaning they burn very, very slowly, giving you more time to remove the hot object/embers etc from the carpet without damage.

How to get rid of carpet static electricity?

You can try using liquid fabric softener in a spray bottle or static elimination sprays on your synthetic carpets.

Or you can avoid this issue entirely by choosing a carpet with a high wool content. Wool fibres naturally have anti-static properties.

OTHER

Can I have carpet if I have under-floor heating?

Yes! In fact, thanks to wool fibres’ unique structure and properties, a wool carpet or rug in the right pile density and weight will act as a conductor for heat.

When shopping for carpet, it’s important to choose options that are suitable with UFH systems, as not every carpet will work. As always, wool out-performs synthetic fibres when it comes to conducting heat - in fact, synthetic carpet can deform, melt or de-laminate if subjected to heat for long periods of time.

When it comes to carpet underlay too, it’s important to choose options compatible with UFH systems. Materials such as felt, rubber and polyurethane absorb heat, meaning they will reduce the effectiveness of your UFH system and risk causing ‘hot spots’. It is recommended to use hessian underlay, which allows warm air to pass through.

Overall, use tog ratings (a measure of thermal resistance) as a guide, taking into account the ratings of both carpet and underlay. It is recommended not to exceed a combined value of 2.5 tog.

To be 100% sure, we recommend that you consult your UFH system manufacturer when choosing carpet and underlay.

Which carpet materials are the best for high traffic areas?

For cut pile carpet, a blend of 80% wool and 20% nylon woven Axminster is the best option for durability.

For loop piles, a 100% wool construction performs best.

Low weight textured loops in nylon we do not classify as carpet, but rather as a low-quality floor covering option to avoid.

How to choose the right carpet density and pile height?

This depends on the space’s intended use, and on your style preferences. Give us a short brief and we can help you decide on the best option.

What is the most sustainable/eco-friendly carpet?

This is a tricky question to answer. Like many industries, the carpet industry’s sustainability credentials read poorly and are seasoned with greenwash. Apart from a handful of clever initiatives, the carpet industry retains a low score for environmental sustainability.

However, in our view reducing carpet churn reduces waste. Statistically, carpets are more often replaced because of their outdated design, and not because they’ve reached the end of their life.

That’s why we believe in a custom-designed approach. A well thought out design defines what materials are used, how the carpet looks and feels, and underpins its longevity. If you’re involved in your carpet’s design process, you are more likely to walk away with something you love and want to keep.

But when it comes to materials, we will always favour 100% wool carpets, or blends with no more than 20% synthetic fibre content, because of wool's inherent superiority.
